Abstract
The use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in the workplace has several implications that are yet to be fully explored. A prominent implication and challenge that needs attention is users' excessive reliance on this technology, which is fostering both functional and socio-emotional dependence. This developmental paper proposes an empirical model that explains the pathways through which GenAI use leads to dependence. By describing the affective and cognitive processes, the study offers a comprehensive explanation based on concepts of need satisfaction, attachment, trust, and cognitive offloading, while acknowledging the role of boundary conditions: loneliness and work overload.
