Abstract
Urgency has both positive and negative effects on projects, which is seen as a double-edged sword. However, project management research lacks a comprehensive understanding of how to navigate urgency to prevent the negative effects and promote the positive effects. This narrative literature review aims to address this omission through the lens of leadership, as leadership actors may construct a sense of urgency, and play a key role in responding to situations of urgency. Through reviewing the literature on project management, leadership, and neighbouring fields, this research will identify the situations of urgency in projects and the leadership contribution in these situations. This BAM developmental paper provides a detailed methodological approach for this narrative review, which involves three distinct steps of data analysis: (1) conducting a keyword search to identify situations of urgency in projects, (2) performing keyword searches to uncover leadership contribution to navigating situations of urgency in projects, and (3) employing snowballing techniques based on articles discovered in step 2 to find more articles related to leadership contribution to navigating situations of urgency in projects. An inductive coding method is then used to analyse the collected data.
