Abstract
In recent years, organisations have been moving from a focus on physical communication to more of a reliance on a virtual communication medium. This research performed a focused systematic literature review to identify the current field of knowledge on physical and virtual communication within organisations and remote project teams. A literature review was performed using a keyword search in six selected key journals between the years 2003 -2023. The literature shows that there are barriers and challenges to both virtual and physical communication and this research identifies if developments in integrated virtual-physical communication can overcome them. The research concludes that the advancement in technology helps to remove some of the barriers to organisations and project teams when using virtual communication; however this cannot fully compensate for not using physical communication. Future research opportunities have been identified, including research directed at identifying the advancements in virtual technology since the COVID-19 pandemic.
