Abstract
Creativity is a desirable dynamic in many modern project environments and creative enterprises
are increasingly seen as important drivers of economic development. The creative industries are said to create symbolic goods of ideas, experiences and meanings. This requires being able to come up with new creative
configurations within a conceptual space of creative liberties. A configuration refers to a particular
structure that assembles resources, people, based on an assessment of individual contributions,
where the aim is to create something greater than simply the sum of who´s there. This paper
considers what traits, properties and elements must be present for creativity to emerge of the order
that is more than simply the sum of participants. The aim is to understand better how to manage
creative project teams that are often made of individuals that value their creative autonomy. A
brand of employee, the creative, has emerged who has traits and properties that drives the
conceptual stretching of imagination and possibilities within a project team. For the project
manager, the challenge is how to manage a team of highly individualistic people whilst generating
the esprit de corps that creates the sort of superior value of the kind that cannot be predefined or
even imagined at the scoping and planning phase of the project. The analogy of a jazz band is used as an opportunity to think about and in fact observe creativity as it happens in the spontaneous interaction between creative individuals and to
ponder how this dynamic can be constituted in creative project teams
