Abstract
This present paper explores the growth strategy of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) within a highly complex and uncertain operating environment. It discusses the broader context of corporate strategy in nationalised oil enterprises and summarises research evidence based on stakeholder interviews and qualitative data. Using field insights and existing literature, we advance an understanding of how NNPC manages external pressures, regulatory challenges, and market fluctuations to drive organisational growth. We demonstrate the adaptive nature of NNPC’s strategic planning and highlight the interplay between environmental forces and corporate decision-making. Central to our contribution is the notion that agility, risk management, and governance reforms are critical to sustaining long-term growth in national oil companies. We conclude by providing implications for policy and practice as well as directions for future research on corporate strategy and resilience in state-owned enterprises.
