Abstract
The aim of this conceptual paper is to explore the impact of technological advancement on the employment relationship in the advent of increased adoption of advanced technology in the workplace. The paper seeks to answer the questions: (1) In what ways can technology make a positive impact on the employment relationship? (2) In what ways does technological advancement impact on the employment relationship and employee wellbeing in the workplace? To answer these questions, the paper will provide a review of the current literature, highlighting emerging issues around the use of technology at work and how it impacts on work and employee-relations. The paper draws on the labor process theory (LPT) as a theoretical lens to develop an understanding of how technology in the workplace degrades the employment relationship, in many respects commoditizing employees and treating them as a malleable resource.
