Abstract
Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) play a critical role in a firm’s profitability, strategic value creation, and implementing organisational diversity practices. The career journey of CEOs, often seen as the pinnacle of the corporate ladder, has also attracted much attention both in research and practice. However, while some research has explored the career patterns of CEOs, there is still limited empirical research focusing on the career and life stories of migrant CEOs. The current study aims to gain insights into the life-stories and career journeys of Migrant CEOs in Australia, including their challenges, opportunities, careers, and leadership development journeys. In particular, the current study aims to address the issues of career progression, diversity, equal employment opportunities, understanding the employment and assimilation challenges for migrants reaching the top management positions. To address the research aim, the study will adopt a two-pronged approach. First, a series of interviews with migrant CEOs in Australia will be conducted. Secondly, we will be analysing a series of interviews conducted by the Australian Financial Review which is published in a podcast called “How I Made It”, featuring the career journeys of successful Australian CEOs and entrepreneurs. Finally, the study highlights several implications for research.
