Abstract
The Welsh Government’s language strategy intends to reach a million Welsh speakers by 2050. Community sport is one area of public life identified with potential for young people to use the Welsh language, ‘beyond the school gate.’ Using Kingdon’s Multiple Streams Approach (MSA), this paper seeks to understand the policy process in relation to minority language and community sport. It uses desk-based research and qualitative interviews with key policy informers from local, regional, and national organisations. An exploration of the intersections between the five conceptual areas of MSA provides the focus of the research. The use of MSA offers a fluid, non-linear process to examine policy development and implementation although the research also reveals challenges associated with the promotion of the national language strategy.
