Abstract
Wicked problems continue to abound in spite of organisational commitments to progressive values. Scholarly understanding of the apparent disconnect between these values commitments and the value created by organisations meanwhile remains limited. This paper seeks to start unravelling this research puzzle and practical issue through examining the role of valuation as a managerial practice. Through drawing on the work of the American pragmatist movement which conceptualises valuation as a process of judgment by a social actor whereby value is assigned to an object, we seek to reorient responsible management research on value(s) towards a valuation perspective. Based on this perspective we put forward a series of propositions for responsible management research that allows original research avenues to be unlocked alongside substantive action to close the gap between organisational values statements and how and what value is created in practice by organisations.
