Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to make a systematic review of the recent research output on scale up firms. These firms are enterprises that irrespectively of their age accomplish high growth rates, and thus are crucial for job creation. A systematic search of literature published for the last 30 years (1992-2022) was conducted through ISI Web of Science and Google Scholar, and a qualitative analysis of the data set was performed. A total of 66 articles were included in this research. The study describes scale up firms from multiple levels of analysis (individual, organizational, environmental, and geographical), while also analyzing the most important factor that contributes to scale up success, that of scalability. The evolution of scale up companies over time, as well as public policy interventions are also discussed. The study concludes with suggestions for future research directions.
