Based on 319 public sector nurses, we found support for our hypotheses. As a bundle of job demands, experienced HPWS offset the positive effect of belongingness on engagement and intensifies the debilitating effect of interpersonal conflict on engagement through belongingness. We advance the conversation on the dark side of HPWS in the public healthcare sector and offer practical suggestion on how HR managers can put in place the appropriate interventions to help them combine and deploy experienced HPWS bundles to create a supportive workplace for their frontline nurses.
