Abstract
The Blue Economy concept combines the views of oceans and seas as areas of growth, industrialisation, and development, on the one hand, and as vulnerable spaces that need to be protected and safeguarded, on the other hand. It goes beyond the traditional notion of the marine (or ocean) economy because it is interpenetrated by sustainability. This study explores how actors in the Blue Economy embrace sustainability and apply the UN SDGs to develop locally grounded, globally impactful responses to changes in the environment. Based on data from two interdisciplinary online workshops, narrations provided by experts in the field are extracted and linked to dominant discourses in the Blue Economy. Different thought styles and approaches to address sustainability are discernible. Drawing on the findings from the narrative inquiry, avenues for future research connecting global strategy and the Blue Economy are outlined.
