Abstract
The present study endeavours to undertake a critical analysis of the Indian leather industry's current state, with a particular emphasis on the pressing sustainability challenges it confronts, and to advance strategies for its revitalization. The research method employs both primary and secondary data sources, encompassing industry reports, field-level observations and interviews with key stakeholders. The inquiry is organized into four discrete sections, each intended to offer a comprehensive comprehension of the industry and its current condition. The principal objective of this research is to provide valuable insights and recommendations for policymakers and industry practitioners to aid in the resurgence of the Indian leather industry. The findings of this study are expected to augment our understanding of the obstacles faced by the Indian leather industry and offer useful perspectives for decision-makers and industry leaders as they strive to revitalize the sector. Moreover, the study's ramifications are expected to have a significant impact on sustainable development, considering the leather industry's crucial role in supporting the livelihoods of many individuals and driving the country's economic progress. It is crucial to note that the study encountered two significant limitations. First, low participation from respondents due to their reluctance to engage in dialogue and their unwillingness to allow us to record conversations and take pictures. Second, the COVID-19 pandemic prevented us from visiting West Bengal, which would have added further strength to our findings.
